Be aware of remote access phone scams
There has recently been a spike in remote access scams. Below we show you how the scam works and what you can do to protect yourself, family and friends.
How it works
- The scammer calls you claiming to be from an organisation such as software companies, utility providers, government agencies or financial institutions.
- They will create an elaborate story to convince you that you need to download software to your computer and that they are here to help you.
- This software allows them to gain remote access to your computer, meaning they can then view and even control your device. Giving them access to personal information.
- They’ll ask you to log in to your Internet Banking, which gives them direct access to your accounts.
How to protect yourself
- If a caller asks you to download software, hang up.
- Never allow any unsolicited callers to gain remote access.
- Never share Internet Banking passwords or passcodes.
- If you’re ever unsure, hang up and call the company back on a public advertised number.
How we can help
If you ever receive a phone call and are unsure or feel uneasy about it, give us a call and we can take precautionary measures to try and prevent anything from happening.
