Passing of Retired Firefighter Edmund Oliver
10/12/2021Thanks to Clyde Buttery for the post.
Keith Bailey and his intrepid crew, also known as the Kadina Auxiliary Fire Service. Last weekend (20,21 November 2021)Trevor and I journeyed to Kadina to help Keith, and most of Kadina, celebrate his 90th Birthday. Keith’s crew held the Lehman Shield, for the most outstanding country station, for so many years that Gary Cooper had to take a jack-hammer with him, to get it off the wall. Trevor Bailey and Richard Gray both graduated to the MFS through Keith’s tutorlage. As you know, all firies get a nickname, and so did Keith. He was known, throughout Kadina, as ‘Captain Feerless’. ‘Bails’ demonstrated Keith’s method of donning an airset. A handkerchief over his nose and mouth as he ran into the fire to get the first look, then retire to get an air-set if required. Keith joined the Service in 1952 and retired 47 years later. Trevor and I had a ball, as did Keith. He just couldn’t stop smiling. Well done Mate, I’m proud to be able to call you a friend.
Note: Keith is on far left in picture
